sustainability on the social development

The concept about sustainability on the social development

In the past centuries our ancestors tried to live within their basic limitations which were gratified by helping other people. The change which was made by the time has changed everything without changing the reality that was preached by the load Buddha. In this century the most of people living in the middle of the phase which was made by have and have not. The most of people questions about the insufficient resources to gratify without concerning future generation. In the present we are gradually experiencing direct and indirect aftermaths of people’s officious intermediating on physical and psychical compliments. According to this view number of concept and ideologies follow to address this updated problem.

Hence as human beings all we have to focus our attention on above ideology to stabilize the inheritance of the future generation.

In this article I would make effort to keep your unconscious need on the conscious active participation.  In the area of social science, ideas which affect millions of people and guide the policies of nations must be accessible to all, not just to elite. Then try to understand the concept of sustainable development how could be utilization relevant to your field.

In the beginning of industrial and capitalistic growth, they identify development as a main concept. But subsequently the economic growth is not recognized as an only vital tool of the development. In that view development is qualitative changing which is happening in every section of the society. In other words development is qualitative change that is happening in economic and social organ. The change should be revolutionary weigh with not only economically socially culturally educationally and health but also attitudes and person sentiments. Then they should have high attitudes on person mind and how to manage philosophy also.

There are three core values of the development.

·         The ability to meet basic needs.

There should be the ability of achieving foods, cloths, habitation, water, medicine to survive without any restriction.

·         To be a person.

There should be the ability of living with identity, dignity, respect, honor or recognition without any restriction

·         To be able to choose freedom from servitude.

There should be the ability of choosing an own ideology, political philosophy, political participation also without any restriction.

There are several methods to measure the development in economics and sociology. Per capita income, physical quality of life index, human development index, knowledge economy index act.

What is sustainability development?

We hear the term “sustainable development” in high-level discussions; we see it in political platforms and on corporate websites. More and more universities have programmes covering the field. Indeed, sustainable development has become a kind of conceptual touchstone, one of the defining ideas of contemporary society.

Although the essence of the concept of sustainable development is clear enough, the exact interpretation and definition of sustainable development has caused strong discussions (Ciegis, 2004).

Whatever it is we should take into consideration the fact that the concept of sustainable development may be difficult to understand and may have different meaning depending on the analyzed literature on the concept in which it is used. For this reason, in the article I suppose to present several descriptions of sustainable development that would include multiple aspects of this concept.

Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

-World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987, Our Common Future-

Thus, when analyzing sustainable development and its management, the following questions arise. what does the concept sustainability actually mean? What is the content of this concept? In scientific literature, sustainable development has been analyzed in different qualitative aspects, such as economic, social, ecologic, institutional, ethical, political, etc

‘Munasinghe (1994) presented an even broader view of sustainable development, defining it as the process of increasing the spectrum of alternatives allowing individuals and communities to realize their aspirations and potential in the long perspective, at the same time maintaining the regeneration ability in economic, social, and ecological systems’

When we consider above definitions which were tried to covering the status of the concept could be come to common accordance for analyzing the activities of the society. Hence At the end of this short introduction, i will mention the definition that was used in the National Strategy of Sustainable Development (2003)

Sustainable development is the society’s development that creates the possibility for achieving overall wellbeing for the present and the future generations through combining environmental, economic, and social aims of the society without exceeding the allowable limits of the effect on the environment.

Then the sustainability is the concept that should be followed in the conversation on social development and we cannot achieve appropriate results which are proposed by wasting vital social capital.

Debates on the Concept of Sustainable Development from Different Academic Perspectives
It is noteworthy that in different subjects sustainable development is defined differently. Here I will try to see the development in the view of sociology. Firstly I mention the referent point of view to look at the definition of sustainable development.

a)      In economics it is development ensuring that the per capita income of future generations is not lower than that of the present generation;

b)     In sociology it is development that preserves the community, i.e. maintains close social relationships in communities;

c)   In ecology it is development that preserves the diversity of biological species, essential        ecosystems, and ecological processes.

Sustainability forces limitations upon the society’s ability to exchange with the surrounding natural systems and upon the society’s structure as well. It has trustable engagement within social and ecological perspectives. Then it’s very uncomfortable to make a consensus without addressing social sustainability socio-cultural perspective as well.

People-oriented the social-cultural sustainability concept reflects the interface between development and dominating social norms and strives to maintain the stability of social systems. (Chambers, 1989; Bohle et al., 1994; Ribot et al., 1996).

Although the growth in per capita incomes over the last decade has been associated with a decrease in overall poverty levels, there is growing regional disparity in incomes and poverty levels. The ongoing ethno nationalistic conflict continues to have a serious impact on the socio-economic situation in the country, and has inflicted considerable damage to natural resources.

Then we have to pay attention in this regard more than ever for stabilizing the social situation with developing social cultural norms and values on behalf of the future generation.

The concept of sustainable development through the services of probation and child care institution.

Here I intend to have a conversation through the deliberation with the support of institutional perspective, how to deal with the social phenomenal special reference to probation and childcare services in srilankan society. In that view sustainable development should be a radical change trough a social stimulation that using a structural time period. It has not physical figure to identifying the social situation which is being establishing step by step within structural period.

In sociological perspectives, the change which we expect to have positive direction could be attitudes change or behavioral change. The most of societies have deep advertency on physical development index. But recently they look at the social indexes which are more consequence on sustainable development. In that view we have a vital obligation to render as a government officer for a better society.

Then the question is how we can apply our contribution for that application. There is no main idea or path to engage with that work. So whatever you do that should be underscore the main point that survive the condition of sustainable development.

The Sri Lanka Strategy for Sustainable Development (SLSSD) seeks to achieve this vision through eradication of poverty, ensuring competitiveness of the economy, improving social development, ensuring good governance, and a clean and healthy environment. These five goals prioritize the challenges that have to be addressed in the path to achieving sustainable development.

Then there are several main factors that take into consideration when implementing a new project on development sector.

                            01.   EFFICIENCY

                            02.   EQUITY WELFARE

                            03.   ENVIRONMENT SUSTAINABILITY

                            04.   RELATIVE TECHNOLOGY

According to above profile it’s very essential to create sustainable development project that are usually friendly but something different sustainable society.

With the main factors which are mentioned above we have to engage in great need of achieving profitable social development with these main sections. These are because of the sustainable development.

01. Economic sustainability

We know that there are major development project that were implemented after the war situation in Srilanka.  In some projects have been implemented with the help of direct foreign debt. Some projects are running in the connection with government investment. Whatever it is the fact that every development projects were launched for the welfare of the community.
